Julie Welch took over as HR director of FTSE 100 company Bunzl in September 2016 after five years at distribution company Wincanton.

As the HR director for Wincanton, Welch was responsible for the development and implementation of all initiatives relating to people management, pensions and internal communications. Welch reports to the chief executive and leads an HR & pensions team of over 100 people.

Responsible for over 15,500 colleagues across 200+ sites in the UK and Ireland, Welch is leading Wincanton’s approach to increase employee engagement, attract new talent, develop existing staff and rebalance diversity across the business and the sector.

Prior to joining Wincanton in February 2011, Welch worked for Royal Mail as HR director for operations & modernisation, in which she managed over 147,000 staff across 1,500 delivery locations, mail centres and logistics sites.

Before joining the Royal Mail she previously held senior HR roles at InBev and Sainsbury’s.

Welch attained a degree in English and Social Anthropology from Keele University in 1989, and an MA in human resource management from Middlesex University in 1993.

She is a member of the Institute of Directors and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.

Welch lives with her husband Neil and her two children in Hertfordshire. Her eldest is currently attending York University to study English, while her youngest is in sixth form and hopes to be either a finance director or a singer/song-writer.

Outside work she enjoys a wide range of sports, from the gym to skiing (whenever she is able to get to the mountains), and loves books.
