Six out of ten HR directors believe management reluctance to tackle absenteeism is the main cause for employee absence.
Recruitment consultancy Badenoch & Clark found 42% of HRDs think employee disengagement is a the root cause of absenteeism in the public sector.
Nicola Linkleter, executive director of the public sector division at Badenoch & Clarke, said: "The worrying revelation here is absenteeism seems to be tied closely with the need for consistent training of managers in how to approach the issue. That, of course, makes it a much more challenging problem to address."
